Restoring a Classic: The Volvo MD2 Engine Rebuilt for a Norwegian Wooden Sloop

Steve Basuino • 4 March 2025

There’s something special about breathing new life into a vintage marine engine—especially when it’s a piece of maritime history like the Volvo Penta MD2.

Recently, I had the pleasure of completely rebuilding and restoring one of these classic two-cylinder diesel engines for installation in a beautifully crafted Norwegian-built wooden sloop.

This project was a true labour of love, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern precision engineering.

A Brief History of the Volvo Penta MD2

The Volvo Penta MD2 was introduced in the early 1960s as a rugged and reliable marine diesel engine. Designed for small to mid-sized sailing and motor yachts, the MD2 was renowned for its durability, simplicity, and ability to run for decades with proper maintenance.

With a displacement of 0.8 litres and an output of around 15 horsepower, the MD2 was a solid choice for sailors who needed dependable power. Featuring direct injection, thermosiphon cooling, and a robust cast-iron block, this engine was built to last. Many MD2s are still in service today, a testament to Volvo Penta’s engineering quality. However, after decades of operation, even the best engines require a complete overhaul—and that’s where our expertise came in.

The Restoration Process: Bringing the MD2 Back to Life

1. Initial Assessment and Disassembly

When this particular MD2 arrived in our workshop, it showed all the classic signs of wear: corrosion, internal sludge buildup, and worn-out components. The first step was a full disassembly to assess the condition of each part. We discovered:

  • Heavily worn piston rings
  • Corroded cylinder liners
  • A leaking water pump
  • Electrical components in need of replacement
  • A fuel injection system that needed recalibration

2. Engine Block Restoration

The cast-iron block was cleaned using a specialised process to remove decades of grime and rust. We then honed the cylinder bores and replaced the cylinder liners to restore compression and efficiency.

3. Fuel System Overhaul

One of the key elements in restoring an old diesel engine is ensuring the fuel injection system is operating flawlessly. We stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt the injectors and injection pump, ensuring proper atomisation for efficient combustion.

4. Cooling System Repairs

Unlike modern engines with pressurised cooling, the MD2 relies on thermosiphon cooling, which naturally circulates water through the engine. The heat exchanger was cleaned and tested, and all corroded piping was replaced.

5. Electrical Upgrades

Though we aimed to keep the engine as original as possible, we installed a new 12V starter motor, wiring harness, and alternator to improve reliability. Classic boats deserve classic engines, but a few modern touches can make all the difference when it comes to ease of use.

6. Final Assembly and Testing

Once all components were refurbished or replaced, we meticulously reassembled the engine. Every bolt was torqued to factory specifications, and all moving parts were lubricated to ensure smooth operation. After a thorough bench test, the MD2 roared to life, running smoothly and efficiently—ready to power its next adventure.

Installation in a Norwegian Wooden Sloop

This beautifully restored MD2 is now set to be installed in a traditional Norwegian-built wooden sloop—a vessel that perfectly matches the engine’s heritage. These sloops, known for their graceful lines, sturdy construction, and seaworthiness, were traditionally powered by engines just like the MD2. With this restoration, we’re not just bringing back a reliable power source; we’re preserving a piece of history.

Why Restore a Classic Engine Instead of Replacing It?

Many boat owners wonder whether it's worth restoring a vintage engine instead of swapping it for a modern diesel or even an electric motor. While new technology has its advantages, there are several reasons why classic engines like the MD2 are worth saving:

  • Authenticity – A vintage wooden boat deserves a period-correct engine.
  • Durability – These engines were built to last and can often outperform modern equivalents in terms of longevity.
  • Simplicity – With fewer electronic components, classic diesels are easier to repair and maintain in remote locations.
  • Character – There’s something special about the sound, feel, and operation of a vintage diesel engine.

Conclusion: A New Chapter for a Classic Engine

The successful restoration of this Volvo Penta MD2 has given it a new lease on life, ensuring it will power its Norwegian sloop for years to come. At Steve’s Mobile Boat Service, we take pride in restoring and maintaining classic marine engines, keeping tradition alive while ensuring reliability at sea.
